Waiting times
We are currently seeing people referred between three and three and a half years ago. This is longer than we would like and we are working to reduce the waiting times. Waiting times are subject to change and can get better or worse.
This does not mean you have to wait to start exploring and expressing your gender. For more information on social and legal transition see the “While You Wait” and “Supports” section.
We will contact you in writing as you near the top of the waiting list to organise your initial assessment. It is essential that you keep us up to date with your current address. This is your responsibility. If you do not then you will miss your appointment and a new referral may be needed.
Waiting can be hard, but there are steps that you can take while you wait. There are some services and organisations that can offer peer support and advice in affirming your gender. Some good places to start include:
- TENI: www.teni.ie
- BelongTo: www.belongto.org
- LGBT Ireland: www.lgbt.ie
- GOSSH: www.goshh.ie
- The Outhouse: www.outhouse.ie
- Gender Rebels (Cork): www.genderrebelscork.com
Additionally, we have created a list of local resources for a range of challenges that people may face. Examples include: psychotherapy listings, addiction supports, stress programs, grief services, and many more. For access to our resource pack Click here
Please see our “While You Wait” section
If you have been referred by your GP or a doctor registered with the Irish Medical Council and you are not sure if you are on the waiting list then please contact us on 01 2090009 or by email: [email protected] and we can check for you.
That is fine. You or your GP can let us know and we will remove you from the waiting list.
After removing yourself from the waiting list, you may decide that you do want to attend after all. If this is the case, the please ask your GP to send us a new referral.
If you are already on hormones, and you have had a comprehensive assessment prior to starting hormones, then we may not need to repeat an initial assessment at the NGS.
If you have had an initial assessment elsewhere, then we will ask you and/or your referrer for the records of your initial assessment. Once we have received and reviewed these records then we will be in touch with an update on how this affects your placement on the waiting list.
